Welcome to the Maltby!
A Team Approach…
The National Middle School Association tells us that, “Teaming is the starting place for building a strong learning community with a sense of family. The interdisciplinary team of two to four teachers working with a common group of students is the signature component of high performing schools- literally, the heart of the school from which other desirable programs and experiences evolve.” Maltby 5/6 Intermediate takes a team approach to educating your child. Your student will be assigned to a core academic team of two or three teachers and will circulate among them for their language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science instruction. This team of teachers will be located in adjoining or adjacent classrooms. In this manner we can construct a smaller, more personalized learning environment for your child.
Encore Classes…
Your child will be attending Encore classes on an every other day basis. On day one they will attend music or band (if they opt for band). On day two they will be attending twelve- week long rotations of Art, Physical Education , and World Language.
Scheduling…
We will be referencing several pieces of information as we schedule our 5th and 6th grade students into classes for next year. These include: elementary school attended, gender, band or non-band, previous teacher’s recommendations, academic level, and special needs. We are still working on unifying the process that is currently used in our elementary schools, therefore this list is not all-inclusive. We will make an effort to balance the number of students in each classroom from each elementary school so that your child will have some familiar faces in their primary classroom.
Transitions…
Maltby will be hosting our current 4th grade students in late May for a building tour and orientation. Please click on the FAQ links for more complete information on the 5th and 6th grade program. We will continue to keep you posted with new details as the year progresses.
