Washington DC As much as we would like every student to join us in Washington, this is still a school sponsored activity. As with any school trip, there are expectations for participation and standards for student behavior, maturity, and responsibility.
Though the minimum requirements for eligibility are listed below, we hope that the anticipation of this unique educational experience will serve as an incentive to ensure the excellent behavior we have come to expect and enjoy from Scranton students.
Criteria For Eligibility:Academics: Students are expected to try to complete class/homework and participate in classroom activities/discussions. As an 8th-grade student, he/she is expected to seek out extra assistance if needed. To maintain eligibility, students must maintain passing grades in all classes in Quarters 1-3 (Grade of D- or above). Teachers will confirm each student’s eligibility at the end of each quarter.
Behavior: Students will be allowed to participate in the trip ONLY if they have demonstrated their ability to handle such a responsibility throughout the school year. We expect appropriate citizenship to be demonstrated throughout the year. The following circumstances may result in disqualification from participating in the trip, with reference to the Student Code of Conduct.
Attendance: Students must make every effort to attend school regularly to be successful. Research shows that chronic absence or missing 10 percent of the school year negatively affects a student’s academic performance. At the time of the trip, 10 percent of the school year will be 15 days. To maintain eligibility, students may accrue no more than 15 absences from September 5, 2023 - April 28, 2024. For purposes of eligibility, a student must not receive more than 5 tardy referrals per quarter.
Appeal Process For Disqualified Students:
Appeals and Reinstatement: The responsibility for maintaining trip participation eligibility lies with the student and his/her parents. At the end of each marking period, parents will be notified if their child is not eligible (A letter will be given to the student, and a copy will be mailed home). A student may be removed from the trip up to the day of departure. Parents of students who have been removed from the trip will be notified and have the right to appeal the decision as provided by Brighton Area Schools.
If a student wishes to appeal his/her trip removal, a letter must be submitted to a school administrator within one week of being notified of ineligibility, outlining 1) the reason for the removal from the trip and 2) the rationale why the reinstatement should occur. The school administration and trip advisors will only entertain and/or consider one appeal per student.
If a student is reinstated on the trip after appealing, no other appeals will be accepted, and the student will be on trip probation [no additional academic, behavior, or attendance concerns] for the remainder of the school year.
