A workshop approach is used to teach reading. Over the course of the year, students will read many books and are encouraged to explore different genres, authors, and texts. This approach begins with mini lessons about a reading comprehension skill or strategy. Also the class will be involved in Book Clubs. They will meet in groups to discuss the interaction between themselves and the book they are reading. Students learn to ask questions, make connections with prior knowledge and previously read texts, and have conversations to clarify their comprehension of what they have read. This program includes peer conferences and teacher conferences with students but emphasizes students’ independence and allows them to become successful readers outside of the classroom.
